On Oct. 15, New Mexico confirmed two more New World screwworm cases, a calf and a horse in Grant County, near the Columbus, N.M., port USDA had named next to reopen to Mexican cattle (Meatingplace, Oct. 16). Only Douglas, Ariz., and Santa Teresa, N.M., are open. USDA's Oct. 16 outlook assumes those two stay the only ports through 2027 and says Mexican imports will offset only part of historically low feedlot placements. Average moved only $7.29/lb on Sept 2 → $7.16 on Oct 5 (−13¢ / 1.8%), while fed cattle were down ~14.5% since June. Follow-up on the tariff-free import plan Good Ranchers objected to in August: American Farm Bureau economists tracked 80% lean ground beef at 41 grocery stores in 22 states after lower-tariff trimmings began entering Sept. 1. By Sept. 23 the average had fallen just 16 cents ($7.29 to $7.13/lb, about 2%); 30 stores hadn't changed their price at all, and only 3 reached the 25% discount the proclamation encouraged. AFBF (a farm-advocacy group) also cites an expected record-low calf crop of 32.5 million head.
